What Is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) healing technique for balancing the flow of energy or life force that flows through the body. This medical procedure involves the insertion of extremely thin needles through the skin at strategic points on the body. It is most commonly used to treat pain.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture treatments carried out in hospitals and other healthcare facilities in the West today are based on the same principles that were established in ancient Eastern texts. These traditional Eastern beliefs explain that health is a result of a harmonious balance of the life force known as gi or chi, which is said to flow through pathways throughout the body. Illness is said to be the consequence of an imbalance of the forces.

These pathways can be accessed through a number of acupuncture points. If needles are inserted into these points with appropriate combinations, it is believed that energy flow can be brought into proper balance.

How Is Acupuncture Performed?

Acupuncture treatments generally involve several weekly appointments; most courses consist of at least 12 sessions. During the procedure, you will be asked to lie down. Sometimes the needles are heated or stimulated with electricity after insertion.

As the needles are inserted the patient should feel them, usually without pain at first. However, once the needle reaches the right depth there should be a deep aching sensation. Once inserted, the needles will remain there for about twenty minutes.

What Are the Benefits of Acupuncture?

  • Very few side effects
  • Effective in combination with other treatments
